This fly was created by Capt. Joe Blados of Greenport, NY. This is one of the simplest flies to tie. It is super versatile and super effective. Most fly fishermen fish this fly on the surface, but it was designed to be fished sub-surface. That’s the way I fish it. With its broad profile and erratic action this fly will catch stripers, blues, and even albacore and bonito. Sometimes this pattern catches fish when no others will. I love any saltwater pattern with big eyes and this one has em’. I always give this fly a try when peanut bunker are around.

After tying on the tail of the fly, the body foam is attached to the hook with a fast acting super glue or gel. You have to hold it in place until it sets. The biggest recommendation I have to shaping and cutting the foam body is to make a template, trace it on the foam, and cut it out. I’ve also seen foam cutters that have been developed to specifically cut out the bodies. To color the body you can use magic markers, rub-on type foils, or just glue glitter on it. The other tip I have is when tying this fly is to tie up a bunch for them and create an assembly line scenario. Last time I tied up a bunch I got a group of friends together to tie them.

Over the years I’ve found that the best thing about fishing and tying flies is that it gives me an opportunity to be with friends, and to meet new ones. I hope this fly works for you.
