Bear’s Big Yak Attack
Hook – Mustad #34011 or similar hook, size 3/0 or larger. This fly is tied on a size 5/0.
Thread – Clear monofilament. Lower Body – White Yak hair
Body – White Yak hair, over which is green fibablend or flash n’ slinky.
(There are a ton of artificial materials out there on the market. Use
your personal favorite)
Eyes – Reflective doll eyes.
Adhesive/Coating – Goop is used to adhere the eyes to the fly and also to provide a coating over the portion of the fly above and below the hook shank. There are many times when salt water fishing that you have to tie on the biggest pattern in you box to imitate the large bait fish bass or blues are feeding on. There’s also the time tested axiom, “Big flies catch big fish!” This is one pattern that’s easy to tie using some natural and some of the newer artificial materials. It can be pretty much be tied as large as you want. This is an easy fly to tie. Just takes a little practice.
Begin by tying in a length of yak hair approximately 1 ½ times the hook shank length. Tie in a few lengths of yak hair for the lower body at about a 45 degree angle to the hook shank. Upon completion of the fly you are going to trim the lower part of the body to shape.
Tie in a long length of yak hair for the top portion of the body. Over the yak hair tie in a little longer length of fibablend or other artificial material. Glue the reflective doll eyes on with goop. Add more goop near eyes. With moistened fingers spread the goop so that it covers that portion of the body near the hook shank.
