Hook: Tiemco 2487 Size #14
Bead: Gold Bead Thread: Olive
Tail/Shuck: Lt. Blue Dun Z-lon
Rib: Fine Gold Wire
Dubbing: Olive Hare’s Ear or Squirrel
Wing: Lt. Blue Dun Z-lon
Collar: 1 or 2 strands peacock herl
I’ve never repeated a pattern before but this one is so good it merits repeating. It first appeared in the newsletter about 8 years ago. It is an excellent caddisfly pupae imitation for the “Green Caddis” hatch that occurs in May on the Hous. Please know that it’s effective all year long. I had
my second best day on the river with this fly in October. The Z-lon is highly effective in trapping water bubbles giving the fly ‘living movement’.
I really don’t know why this fly works but it does. I never fished a nymph/pupae with a shuck and wing before. Begin by placing gold bead on hook. Place the hook in vice and bend it slightly off center to enhance the hooking capability of the fly. Begin wrapping thread from the bead head to
the bend of the hook. Tie in ten to twelve strands of Z-lon for a shuck. It should be approximately 1/3 the length of the hook shank. Tie in fine gold wire for ribbing. Dub a tapered nymph body leaving enough room for a wing and collar. Rib body with fine gold wire. Tie in a Z-lon wing. Use
about the same amount of material used in the shuck and the same length. Tie in one or two strands of peacock herl. Make a couple wraps for a collar. Tie it off at the gold bead.
