This is just an incredible fly. It is my #1 after dark saltwater pattern. It will out fish any other black pattern out there. Why? Because with its deer hair head it moves more water than any other fly. That’s the focus of attracting fish to bite. It can be dragged across the surface with floating line, or sunk and fished deep with a weighted hook shank if you desire. I know a lot of people will avoid tying this pattern because you need to spin a deer hair head. Don’t let that stop you. It’s like any other fly tying technique. Just takes a little practice.

This fly is also extremely versatile. I’ve had great success tying it fly with a chartreuse or olive head, with white saddles and marabou. I have also used a synthetic rabbit strips instead of marabou to tie some lager flies. Substitute a head spun with lambs wool, coat it with silicone, and you have a great saltwater surface slider. Tie it smaller on a fresh water hook and you have agreat pattern for smallies on the Housatonic.

Here is a picture of a bald eagle on the Housie this winter. He got a lot more fish than I did.
