January 2006 Fly of the Month – The Moby Dick [Tom Klimovich]

The following fly of the month and river review was written by Tom Klimovich, an H.F.F.A. member who
passed away recently. It was submitted as a tribute to Tom by his friend Bob Nikituk.

The Moby Dick

Thread – Black or olive
Hook size – #2xl or #3xl #8 to #12
Tail – Golden pheasant tippits, tied sparse.
Body – 2 or 3 strands of peacock herl tied together to form body.
Rib – Five gold or copper wire reverse wrapped through entire body.
Over rib – Dark ginger hackle feather palmered length of body.
Wing – Lemon wood duck flank feather tied flat over body and hackle.

“I fish this fly as a streamer, nymph, stone-fly, and unweighted greased and dragged over the surface of pools just before dark. This method sometimes brings vicious strikes by enormous fish. Every fly-box
should have this fly in it.”
